What Do You Need to Create a Lightboard Studio?

We frequently get asked: what is needed to create lightboard videos? What equipment is needed to build a lightboard studio? The outline and video below cover the primary elements to help answer those questions!

Required:

Lightboard

This is the critical piece of the studio as it is the canvas you present on. See more details here.

Camera

You can’t have a video without a camera. We recommend camcorders as they are built for video which makes them the most robust type of camera for this application. Professional camcorders offer a number of options that allow for image control and streamlined operation. It is possible to use other camera types such as a smartphone, webcam, DSLR, etc but there are added nuances for each option.

Microphone

If your viewers can’t hear you clearly, they are not following your message and engagement will be lost. An internal microphone on a camera will give very limited quality. We recommend a dedicated microphone system including a lapel-worn or fixed microphone.

Markers

You have to have markers to write! Read more about options here.

Studio/Presenter Lighting

The presenter should be well-lit so all expressions and gestures can be captured as part of the natural presentation. With lightboards, watch out for visible reflections that lights can provide. Lights must be located outside of the reflection zone-learn more about studio layout considerations. We build presenter lights into all of our lightboards to greatly simplify this requirement.

A Message Worth Sharing!

A lightboard studio is simply a tool. Make it shine with a strong message or lesson. See examples here based on your industry, as well as more examples here.

Optional:

Hardware or Software for the Left/right Flip

Flip your video in real-time - required if live streaming your video content. Also reduces or eliminates the need to use video editing software and allows use of a confidence monitor if desired. More options can be found in our FAQ, under Using a Lightboard.

Confidence Monitor

A common tool in most lightboard studios so the presenter can see exactly how they look to their viewers. It gives them confidence that they are doing something awesome for their viewers! This will often need to be paired with a CPL filter. If adding overlay images to a presentation, this is required to interact with those images.

A Second Monitor

This is nice to have for conference calls, to be able to see participants. It also helpful to display presentation notes and more.

Backdrops

This is also a common addition to the studio. Backdrops provide a uniform background for behind the presenter, and even help with the acoustics in the room! Backdrops behind your camera eliminate reflections off of the lightboard that are otherwise seen by a camera.

Additional Lighting

Additional fill or hair lighting can help give definition and contrast between the presenter and their background. Again, be mindful of visible reflections additional lights can create.

Streaming & Recording Hardware

A lightboard studio becomes much more user-friendly when the user can easily stream lightboard video and audio to any platform of your choice like Zoom, MS Teams, Google Meet and many more. Also, if a user can record their video pre-flipped, video editing is often not necessary.
